Headlines : 13th December, 2008

More economic indicators that we are in the midst of a global recession. The Russian-Vodka-Drinking Index is down 700 pints.

Treasury Secretary Henry Paulson has urged consumers to spend more during the holiday season. Easy for him to say. Dude has a $700 billion spending limit on his card.

More on Blagojevich. Its not clear what he meant, but the Mayor of Chicago, Richard Daley, has asked Blagojevich to ‘do the right thing’ for the city. Here’s my question – If the Governor was in the habit of doing the right thing, would he be in this mess right now?

And the scandals keep coming. Bernard Madoff, President of a NY Investment firm, has been charged with operating one of the biggest financial fraud schemes in Wall Street history. (Not counting Lehmann Brothers, Merrill Lynch, Citigroup, AIG, GE Finance, Washington Mutual, Wachovia, Goldman Sachs, Morgan Stanley…)

Madoff may have swindled as much as $50 billion! That’s a lot of dough. With that kind of money, you can buy as many as 20 Senate seats at current market rates.

Hell, with 50 billion, you can pay the United Auto Workers (UAW) retirement benefits for upto 3 months.

Yep. The excessive commitments to the Workers Union have not helped the cause of the big 3 in the Senate. The Republicans voted against the bill. I guess GOP stands for Gang Of Party-poopers.

This is interesting. Tonight, the moon is going to swing by the Earth at its closest distance in 15 years. In fact, it’s going to be so close that I can take better pics of the moon’s surface with my iPhone than the Chandrayaan ever could.

The battle in Sri Lanka. Heavy fighting in the North of the country has left the land ravaged and hundreds of men from both sides dead. A visibly concerned Ram Gopal Verma has offered to take a tour of the warzone, if it helps.

Celebrity news. Its actor Rajinikanth’s birthday today. He’s busy these days working on his latest multi-million dollar project, ‘Robot’. If you ask me, that kind of money is better spent making more of these robots.

Jennifer Aniston is still carrying on and on about her split-up with Brad Pitt. She just can’t get over the fact that he’s married to Jolie and has kids and all that. GQ magazine calls it ‘the Great Depression’ of the 21st century.

Shah Rukh Khan in the news for winning an award in Malaysia. Frankly, I’ve had a hard time deciding which is more painful to watch – SRK wearing this misplaced moustache or this egregious ensemble.

In her next release “Kambakth Ishq”, Kareena plays a surgeon who is also a super-model. I swear. Not much scope for me to add anything here, no? Why bother?

Have a good weekend everyone.
